INFORMATION ABOUT THE SAT & ACT

 
The SAT is an aptitude test and is composed of ten-sections: three Critical Reading, three Math, three Writing, and one Experimental. The essay component is mandatory. The test is scored as 200-800 for each subject with 2400 being the highest possible score.  The test is 3 hours and 45 minutes long. Wrong answers are penalized so no wild guessing!
 

The ACT is curriculum based and is composed of four sections: English, Math, Reading and Science. The essay component is optional. The test is scored as 1-36 with 36 being the highest possible score. The test is approximately 3 hours long (add a half-hour if taking the optional essay component). Wrong answers are not penalized so fill in all answer questions.
 

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is offered once a year in October. Juniors should take it for possible scholarships in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sophomores can take it for practice. PSAT exam is October in the PHS Commons. 
 
  
 
The Compass Test is a placement test used by the 2-year colleges. COMPASS is a comprehensive testing system that helps place students into appropriate courses at the 2-year college level.  The Compass Test is offered at . Three tests (reading, writing, and math) are required. Plan on 1 1/2 hours to take the tests.
